| Opis awersu | Central square perforation characteristic of traditional East Asian cash coinage. The obverse bears four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading order around the central hole: 常平通寶 (Sangpyong T'ongbo), meaning 'Sangpyong Currency,' the standard inscription of the Joseon dynasty Sangpyongchong (Ever-Normal Treasury) coinage. Characters are rendered in regular script (Kaishu), with 常 (Sang) at top and 平 (Pyong) at bottom on the vertical axis, and 通 (T'ong) at right and 寶 (Bo) at left on the horizontal axis. The field is plain, and the inscription is cast in relief against a flat ground. |

The mint mark 尚 (Sang), denoting the Kyongsang Provincial Office (慶尚監營, Kyongsang Kamyong) in modern-day Daegu, appears at the top. Below the hole is the Thousand Character Classic serial character 宇 (U), meaning 'Space' or 'Universe,' used to distinguish this issue within the Kyongsang mint's production sequence. The field is otherwise plain, consistent with standard Joseon cash coin practice. |
