The "Large Type Chong" designation refers to a deliberate upscaling of the standard mun coinage ordered by the Joseon court in 1742, part of a broader attempt to address chronic copper shortages by reducing the number of coins in circulation while nominally maintaining face value — a debasement strategy dressed as reform. The experiment was short-lived; the oversized pieces proved unpopular with merchants and were discontinued within the decade.
