The obverse bears a four-character inscription in classical Chinese regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform layout around the central square perforation: 常 (Sang) at top, 平 (Pyong) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at left, and 寶 (Bo) at right, reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), the standard legend identifying the currency of the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong Directorate. The characters are rendered in a large, bold type consistent with the large-character variety of this issue. The field is plain with no additional decorative elements. |
