Obverse description Cast round coin with a central square hole, bearing four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation. Reading top to bottom: 常平 (Sangpyeong), the name of the Joseon Dynasty's Constant Peace Treasury (Sangpyeong Tongbo office); reading right to left: 通寶 (Tongbo), meaning 'circulating treasure' or currency. The characters are rendered in regular script (Kaishu) style typical of Joseon cast cash coinage, set within a plain inner rim surrounding the square hole and an outer raised rim bordering the coin's edge.
