The four quadrants around the square hole bear the four-character inscription 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo) in regular script (kaishu), reading clockwise from the top: 常 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom — here 寶 is read as the lower character completing the legend), and 平 (left). The characters are bold and well-defined in raised relief against a flat field, enclosed within a raised inner rim surrounding the square perforation and an outer raised border rim. |
