| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash-type coin with a central square hole. The obverse bears four Chinese characters arranged around the central perforation in the traditional cross-reading order: 常 (Sang) at top, 平 (Pyong) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bo) at left, together reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), the standard inscription of the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyong Cheong (Office for Ever-Normal Currency). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in relief against a plain field, consistent with standard Joseon minting practice. |
