| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin centered on a square central hole, around which four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion reading clockwise from the top: 常 (top), 通 (right), 平 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the reign legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo). The characters are bold and well-defined in relief against a flat field, enclosed within a plain raised rim. The overall style is typical of mid-Joseon Dynasty cast coinage. |
