| Obverse description | Four Chinese ideograms arranged around a central square hole in the characteristic cash-coin format. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常平 (Sang-pyong) identify the Sangpyeong agency responsible for currency regulation under the Joseon Dynasty; reading right to left, the characters 通寶 (Tong-bo) signify 'current currency' or 'circulating treasure.' The legends are rendered in regular script (kaishu) style, cast in moderate relief against a flat field, with a raised rim encircling the obverse. |
