Obverse description Cast brass cash-type coin centred by a square perforation, around which the four-character reign legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong T'ongbo) is arranged in the traditional cruciform manner: 常 (Sang) above the hole, 平 (Pyeong) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bo) to the left. The characters, rendered in regular script (kaishu), are raised in relief against a flat, unadorned field. A plain raised rim borders the coin on both the inner square and outer circumference, consistent with Joseon-dynasty cast coinage conventions.
