Cast in brass, the obverse presents four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform around a central square hole. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常平 (Sangpyeong) identify the Sangpyeong Office, the government bureau responsible for price stabilization and currency issuance during the Joseon Dynasty. Reading right to left, the characters 通寶 (Tongbo) denote 'circulating treasure,' the standard formula indicating legal tender status. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) within a plain, unadorned field, consistent with the austere aesthetic of Joseon cast coinage. |
