Mindon Min established the Royal Mint at Mandalay in 1861 — the first mechanized mint in Burmese history — partly to assert monetary independence as British annexation crept northward following the Second Anglo-Burmese War. The 2 Mu 1 Pe denomination sits in the middle of the gold pe-based system Mindon formalized, a deliberate effort to rationalize coinage against the tide of Indian rupees flooding upper Burma through cross-border trade.
Production at Mandalay relied on imported machinery, and total output across all gold denominations remained modest. The Third Anglo-Burmese War of 1885 ended the kingdom entirely, making all Mandalay mint issues terminus ante quem survivors of a discontinued monetary authority.
