Surendra Bir Bikram Shah reigned under the effective control of the Rana prime ministers for virtually his entire tenure, with Jung Bahadur Rana's seizure of power in 1846 reducing the Shah monarchy to a ceremonially useful but politically neutered institution. Coins continued to be struck in the king's name throughout — the Ranas understood the legitimacy that royal coinage conferred even as they held the actual reins of government.
