The lion's forelegs are raised and its tail is curled upward, clearly displaying the heraldic device of the Counts of Hainaut. The surrounding field is enclosed by a beaded border, beyond which the circular Latin legend runs in uncial characters. The overall striking is irregular, consistent with hand-hammered billon coinage of the fourteenth century. |
