| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, a rampant lion facing left in high relief, rendered in the bold, stylized Gothic manner typical of medieval Low Countries coinage. The lion's forelegs are raised and its tail is curled upward, clearly displaying the heraldic device of the Counts of Hainaut. The surrounding field is enclosed by a beaded border, beyond which the circular Latin legend runs in uncial characters. The overall striking is irregular, consistent with hand-hammered billon coinage of the fourteenth century. |
