Obverse description Central field displays the heraldic shield of Flanders bearing a rampant lion to the left, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The shield is rendered in the late medieval Gothic style typical of Burgundian Flemish coinage. A beaded or toothed border frames the outer legend. The circumferential inscription in uncial Latin reads the title of Philip the Handsome as Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders.
