Obverse description Central field occupied by a large globular pellet or orb within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a beaded border. To the left of the inner circle, a rampant lion — the heraldic symbol of Flanders — is visible in low relief. The peripheral legend in uncial Latin reads FL ✠ Ph`S৹ D৹ B৹ COM৹ FLAND`৹, identifying Philip as Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders. The overall style is characteristic of late medieval Flemish hammered billon coinage, with uneven flan and irregular striking typical of the period.
