Margaret II ruled Hainaut simultaneously with her husband William IV until his death in 1345, after which she governed alone until her own death in 1356 — the precise window this coin occupies. The billon mite was the workhorse denomination of the Low Countries market economy, small enough for daily transactions at a time when Hainaut's cloth trade with English wool merchants demanded reliable small change at every tier of exchange.
