The cross is boldly struck with wide, flat arms terminating in splayed ends, consistent with the pattée form common to Hainaut billon issues of the mid-14th century. A circular legend reading MONETA· VALEnCEn surrounds the inner circle, identifying the mint city of Valenciennes. The legend is introduced by a decorative floral or rosette stop. The flan edges are ragged and irregular, typical of the hammered technique. |
