| Obverse description | Crowned and armored bust of Charles V facing right, with a short beard, rendered in a bold hammered style typical of mid-16th century Flemish coinage. The effigy fills much of the field, with the crown clearly visible above the portrait. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, incorporating the regnal titles of the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, with the date and a fleur-de-lis mint mark of Bruges appearing at the end of the inscription. The legend reads: CARLVS D G V ROM IMP HIS REX followed by the year 1545. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border. |

The surrounding border consists of a continuous ornamental scroll or rope pattern, typical of Flemish mites of Charles V.
