Malta decimalized its currency on May 16, 1972, replacing the pound-shilling-penny system with the Maltese lira divided into 100 cents and 1000 mils. This 1982 issue commemorates the tenth anniversary of that transition. The 2 mils denomination was among the smallest in the decimal system and had largely ceased to be economically meaningful by the time this coin was struck — making it, in practice, more commemorative token than working currency from the outset.
