| Obverse description | Three-quarter facing bust of Johann Friedrich I, Elector of Saxony, rendered in high relief in a Renaissance portrait style. The subject is depicted wearing a fur-trimmed robe and an ornate chain of office, with a crowned hat upon his head; a sword hilt is visible at his left shoulder. The commemorative dates 1558 and 1908 appear in the field to the right of the effigy, marking the 350th anniversary of the founding of the University of Jena. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design, reading JOH · FRIED · D · GROSZMUT · KURF · V · SACHSEN · STIFTER · D · UNIV · JENA · SPES MEA IN DEO, identifying the founder and bearing his personal motto 'My Hope is in God'. |
