This issue commemorates the 90th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold, who governed Bavaria not as its king but in place of one — his nephew Otto had been declared insane in 1875 and confined to Fürstenried Palace for the remainder of his life, never abdicating and never reigning in any meaningful sense. Luitpold held the regency from 1886 until his death in December 1912, just months after this coin was struck.
The aluminium-plated steel composition reflects post-war restriking rather than original issue — the 1911 circulation pieces were struck in silver.
