This piece occupies an unusual position in German state coinage: it commemorates the 90th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold while the nominal king, Otto I, remained alive but incurably insane and confined at Fürstenried Palace. Luitpold had governed Bavaria in Otto's name since 1886, never formally taking the crown. He died in December 1912, just over a year after this coin was struck, at which point Otto was finally deposed and Luitpold's son Ludwig assumed the regency — and eventually the throne.
