Frederick Francis II ruled Mecklenburg-Schwerin from 1842 until his death in 1883, making this 1876 issue a late-reign piece struck just as the newly unified German Empire was standardizing its coinage system. The 1871 Coinage Act forced the old German states to abandon their independent monetary traditions and adopt the Mark, meaning Mecklenburg-Schwerin — one of the last holdouts of genuine dynastic conservatism — was legally compelled to mint imperial-format coins bearing a reigning duke's portrait rather than any purely local device.
Mecklenburg-Schwerin had no mint of its own by this period; production was contracted to Hamburg.
