Charles I's long reign over Württemberg coincided almost exactly with the consolidation of the German Empire, and these 2 Mark pieces were among the first issues struck to the new imperial standard established by the Münzgesetz of 1871. Württemberg, despite joining the Reich, retained the right to strike coins bearing its sovereign's portrait — a concession Bismarck granted to the southern states to smooth the political path toward unification.
The 1887 issue carries a notably lower mintage than surrounding years, a consequence of reduced silver allocations from Berlin as the central government tightened control over precious metal distribution.
