附加信息

Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was also the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert — a dynastic quirk that made him simultaneously a reigning German duke and a British prince, at one point a serious candidate for the Greek throne. This 1895 issue marked his 25-year jubilee as Duke, a reign that ended abruptly with his death in 1900, after which the duchy passed to his nephew Carl Eduard rather than any direct heir. Alfred's only son had died by suicide the previous year.

Mintage for jubilee issues from the smaller German states ran notoriously low, and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha's output was among the thinnest of the Kaiserreich's constituent duchies.
