Patterns for the 1876 2 Mark were produced as part of the broader currency unification process that followed German consolidation in 1871 — the new Reich needed standardized coinage across what had been dozens of independent monetary systems. This piece in silver-plated tin is a presentation or approval strike, not a production prototype; tin was a common substrate for pattern work where the intent was to evaluate design rather than metallurgy.
