Additional information

No 2 Mark pattern in steel at this weight entered regular production — the circulating 2 Mark coinage of the German Empire ran to roughly 11 grams in silver. A 42-gram steel striking at 40mm places this closer to the physical profile of a 5 Mark piece, suggesting either a test planchet substitution or a deliberate over-weight trial produced during the early standardization debates that followed German monetary unification under the Münzgesetz of 1871.
