Klippingar — klippe coinages, struck on square or lozenge-cut blanks rather than round flans — were a Swedish emergency minting practice revived during periods of political instability and fiscal strain. This 1568 piece falls directly into the regency dispute following Erik XIV's deposition, when Johan and Karl were asserting control before Johan's formal coronation as Johan III. Emergency-format silver served both as a practical solution to blank shortages and as a rapid way to push coinage into circulation during a period when the legitimacy of the issuing authority was itself contested.
