Karl X Gustav was crowned at Uppsala on June 6, 1654, the same year Christina abdicated — one of the more dramatic transfers of power in Swedish history, involving a reigning queen voluntarily surrendering the throne to her cousin before converting to Catholicism and leaving the country permanently. Coronation issues of this type were struck as presentation and commemorative pieces rather than for general circulation, which accounts for their survival in comparatively sharp condition.

SM#33 is among the better-documented Swedish commemorative references of the mid-17th century, a period when Swedish minting was still consolidating practices across multiple mint facilities.
