Golzern was a prisoner-of-war camp established along the Mulde river in Saxony, and like many German PoW facilities during the First World War, it issued its own internal camp currency to prevent captives from accumulating Reichsmarks that could fund escapes. The Pässler firm in Dresden handled a substantial volume of this notgeld-adjacent work — camp scrip, local emergency issues — during the war years, making their output identifiable by a consistent typeface and layout economy that was functional rather than decorative.
The 2 Mark denomination placed this note at the upper end of typical camp scrip purchasing power, sufficient for canteen goods but carefully calibrated to limit its usefulness outside the wire.
