Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is divided into three vertical panels against a dark border: the two outer panels each show a sack filled with grain or beans, with Low German dialect verses inscribed on them. The wide central panel contains a coloured lithographic vignette titled 'Des Hamsters Traum' (The Hamster's Dream), in which a plump, contented hamster sits amidst piles of potatoes and grain surrounded by floating hams, sausages and loaves. A caption panel below reads 'Dem Hamsterheere wohlbekannt / ist Freren im Hannoverland', and the denomination '2 Mk' appears in large pink shadow letters at left and right. The printer's imprint 'Gebr. Teisman, Freren' is printed in small type at the lower right.

Opmerkingen

Freren is a small town in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony, and its wartime Notgeld was printed entirely in-house — Gebr. Teisman being a local printing firm rather than one of the specialist houses that handled most municipal emergency currency. That decision was common among smaller communities that either couldn't access or couldn't afford the larger Frankfurt or Leipzig printers who dominated the trade.

The 2 Mark denomination places this in the transitional inflation period, after the Reichsmark's credibility had eroded but before hyperinflation made such values meaningless within weeks of issue.
