Comments

Altrahlstedt was a small municipality on the northeastern edge of Hamburg, and this 2 Mark notgeld piece belongs to a locally commissioned series honoring Detlev von Liliencron, the naturalist poet born in nearby Kiel in 1844 who spent much of his later life in the Holstein region. The Detlev v. Liliencron Gesellschaft — a society dedicated to his memory — provided the organizing impetus for the issue, which makes this a rare case of a literary memorial society driving notgeld production rather than a purely municipal fiscal need.

Otto Thämer handled the design work. The 1922 dating places it squarely in the inflationary notgeld wave that preceded the hyperinflationary collapse later that year.
