The royal motto is inscribed in Latin along the outer rim, divided into two segments by the mintmark positioned at the lower portion of the design. Frederik III's reign produced some of the most consequential constitutional changes in Danish history — the 1660 coup-by-consent that abolished the elective monarchy and established hereditary absolutism, a shift that reorganized the entire apparatus of royal finance and minting authority. These 2 Mark pieces were struck in the immediate aftermath of that transformation, as the crown worked to consolidate its economic footing. The Kopenhagen mint was under persistent pressure during these years to meet demand with silver supplies that were rarely adequate.
The clockwise lettering distinguishes this as Type 2, a die variation catalogued separately from the earlier issue. KM#298 specifically.
