Charles XI inherited the Swedish throne in 1660 at age four, ruling under a regency council until 1672. The coins struck during this period reflect the regency government's authority rather than any personal royal direction — the king himself had no hand in monetary policy until well after this series ended. The "smaller bust" distinction separates this from the larger-portrait variant, a die modification that occurred mid-series and is tracked separately in Swedish numismatic literature.
