Charles XI issued this coin during a period of sweeping fiscal reorganization — the reduktion of the 1680s, through which the crown clawed back vast noble landholdings and rebuilt state finances after decades of aristocratic dominance. The policy transformed Sweden from a near-bankrupt kingdom into one of the more solvent states in northern Europe by the 1690s, and the coinage of this period reflects that stabilization in both regularity of output and metal consistency.
The .694 fineness was a deliberate step down from earlier Swedish silver standards, set during monetary reforms that balanced bullion conservation against the need for circulating coin.
