Sylt's wartime and postwar isolation made local small-denomination scrip a practical necessity, but by 1922 the island was issuing notgeld squarely in the inflationary spiral that was consuming the entire Weimar Republic. The Allgemeine Spar- und Leihkasse in Keitum — a savings and loan cooperative, not a municipal authority — was one of the more unusual issuers in the Schleswig-Holstein region, a private institution stepping into a currency gap that the Reichsbank had no interest in filling at the pfennig-and-mark level.
Printed locally by Carl Meyer in Westerland, this note never traveled far. Sylt's limited land connection to the mainland meant circulation was geographically contained almost by geography alone.
