Reverse description A right-facing draped bust of the German painter and graphic artist Alfred Rethel occupies the central field, rendered in low relief with his characteristic mid-19th-century attire. The circular legend 'ALFRED RETHEL' arcs around the upper periphery, while his birth and death years '1816-1859' appear at the base, enclosing the portrait. The likeness commemorates Aachen's celebrated native son, consistent with the civic commemorative theme common to German municipal Notgeld issues of the period.
