Markirch is the German name for Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, a textile town in the Vosges whose administrative identity shifted between France and Germany depending on which war had most recently ended. This note was issued under German municipal authority during the period of Alsatian annexation — the town would revert to France after 1918, at which point German-denominated Notgeld became immediately worthless locally.
The watermark is atypical for municipal emergency issues of this type, most of which used plain stock sourced from whatever the local printer had available.
