Brühl's municipal savings bank issued this 2 Mark note in 1914 as Notgeld — emergency money produced locally when the outbreak of war triggered an immediate hoarding of coins and metal-backed currency across Germany. The Reichsbank could not respond fast enough, so hundreds of municipalities did it themselves. Brühl's issue is among the earliest wave, predating the more systematic and often decorative Notgeld that flooded German towns from 1916 onward.
The small format reflects the informal, expedient nature of the issue — these were printed and circulated fast, not designed for posterity.
