Keitum was the oldest settlement on Sylt, and by 1920 the island's isolation — connected to the mainland only by ferry until the Hindenburgdamm causeway opened in 1927 — made small-denomination coin shortages genuinely acute. This is Notgeld in the strictest functional sense, not the decorative collector-targeted issues that flooded Germany in the same period.
Aug. Westphalen was a Flensburg printer active across the Schleswig region during the Notgeld years, producing municipal issues for several North Frisian communities. The designer credit to Holtz is atypical — most comparable small-town issues went uncredited.
