Opmerkingen

Alfeld an der Leine is a small industrial town in Lower Saxony, best known today for the Fagus shoe-last factory — a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by Walter Gropius and completed in 1913. This 2 Mark Notgeld was issued five years later, when the wartime metal shortage forced hundreds of German municipalities to plug the gap left by hoarded coins. J. C. König & Ebhardt, the Hannover printer responsible here, produced emergency municipal paper for numerous towns across the region during this period.

The Leine designation in the issuer name distinguishes the town from other Alfelds — a necessary clarification even on locally circulating scrip.
