Goslar's 1922 notgeld issues were printed locally by Lattmann, an uncommon arrangement — most municipalities of any size contracted out to the major Leipzig or Berlin printing houses rather than relying on regional printers. The 2 Mark denomination was issued during the acute inflationary spiral of mid-1922, when Reichsmark purchasing power was collapsing fast enough that municipal scrip of this value had a measurable but brief useful life before being rendered functionally worthless by the broader currency crisis.

Rudolf Fricke's design work for Goslar's notgeld series drew on the city's medieval mining heritage — Goslar having been a center of silver extraction since the tenth century.
