Beschrijving voorzijde Central field displays the crowned episcopal monogram of Bishop Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg, rendered without a frame (KM#233.1) or within a frame (KM#233.2). The crown above the monogram is of the ecclesiastical type, consistent with the rank of a prince-bishop. The circular legend around the periphery reads HOCHF. PADERB. LAND. MUNTZ, denoting the territorial coinage authority of the High Principality of Paderborn. The overall design is characteristic of late-baroque German ecclesiastical small coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

The Bishopric of Paderborn was one of the more financially strained ecclesiastical principalities of the Holy Roman Empire by the mid-eighteenth century, and small billon issues like this one reflect the diocese's ongoing struggle to maintain a functioning petty coinage without access to significant silver reserves. William Anthony von Asseburg held the see only from 1763 until his death in 1782, making his issues a relatively narrow window in Paderborn's long minting history.

The Mariengroschen denomination was a Lower Saxon accounting unit deeply embedded in regional commerce — its name derived from the Virgin Mary's association with Goslar's mint centuries earlier.
