Theodore Adolphus von der Recke served as Bishop of Paderborn from 1650 to 1661, governing a diocese that had been devastated by the Thirty Years' War — Paderborn's economy and population were still visibly broken when this coin was struck. Small silver issues like this mariengroschen were the workhorses of regional reconstruction commerce, filling a gap left by years of debased wartime coinage that had eroded public trust in circulating money across the Westphalian territories.
