Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality status was formally recognized by the United Nations in December 1995 — an unusual diplomatic achievement that the country has since turned into a cornerstone of its national identity, commemorated repeatedly in official coinage. The 1995 declaration came under Saparmurat Niyazov, the eccentric autocrat who renamed months of the year after himself and his mother.
Gold issues from the Central Bank of Turkmenistan in this period were struck in extremely limited quantities, produced almost entirely for collector export rather than domestic circulation.
