The truncation of the bust carries the engraver's signature DUVIV. in small incuse letters, with a mint mark below. The surrounding legend reads LUD• XVI• D• G• FR• ET NAV• REX (Ludovicus XVI, Dei Gratia Franciae et Navarrae Rex — Louis XVI, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre), rendered in relief Roman capitals on a smooth field. The portrait was engraved by Pierre-Benjamin Duvivier and reflects the refined neoclassical style characteristic of the French royal coinage of the 1780s. |
