This piece was struck as part of Malta's first commemorative series following independence from Britain in 1964 and the subsequent declaration of a republic in 1974. The Galea — a traditional Maltese fishing boat — held particular national significance in the mid-1970s as the government under Dom Mintoff pursued a policy of assertive non-alignment, deliberately anchoring Maltese identity in indigenous cultural symbols rather than colonial ones.
The .987 fineness is notably purer than the .925 standard common to most contemporary silver issues, a deliberate specification by the Central Bank of Malta for this inaugural collector series.
