Additional information

Victor Amadeus II had just extracted a kingdom from the wreckage of the War of the Spanish Succession — crowned King of Sicily in 1713 before being forced to swap that island for Sardinia in 1720. This 1717 issue falls squarely in the Sicilian interlude, struck when Savoy was still adjusting its monetary output to reflect its new royal status after centuries as a duchy. The elevation changed the political calculus of the mint at Turin considerably.

MIR CS#884 is among the scarcer dated varieties of the type.
