Italy maintained a network of civilian internment camps during the Second World War, holding foreign nationals and Italian citizens deemed politically or racially suspect under Fascist law. Padova's camp was among those that issued scrip for internal transactions — a practical measure to prevent internees from accumulating Italian currency that could theoretically fund escape attempts or outside contact.
Camp scrip of this type was destroyed at liberation or confiscated; survivors rarely thought to preserve it. The Campbell reference 6540 places this among the better-documented Italian internment issues, but genuine examples in any condition remain uncommon.
