| 正面描述 | The papal coat of arms of Pope John XXIII occupies the central field, depicted as a heraldic shield surmounted by the tiara and flanked by two crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield bears the Roncalli family arms featuring a tower motif. The circumferential legend reads IOANNES·XXIII·PONTIFEX·MAXIMVS, with the regnal year AN·IV flanking the lower portion of the shield. A small ornamental cross appears at the bottom of the field. |

Struck for the year Vatican II opened — October 1962 — this coin predates the Council's most consequential decisions, which wouldn't come until the third and fourth sessions under Paul VI. John XXIII, who called the Council into being, died in June 1963 having presided over only its first session. The reforms to the liturgy, ecumenism, and the Church's relationship with the modern world that the Council is remembered for were completed entirely without him.
